CANASTOTA . . .
Thomas J. Cerio, 69, of Canastota, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, following complications from an unexpected illness.
He was born on May 3, 1948 in Canastota, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret "Marge" (Thompson) Cerio.
Tom has lived in Canastota all of his life, graduating from Canastota High School in 1966. He later attended Norwich University in Vermont, and Morrisville College.
He was Vietnam Veteran, serving in combat overseas with the US Army, and received the Bronze Star.
Tom worked in the construction industry for over 40 years. Prior to his retirement he worked for DiVeronica Brothers and Concrete Slip-Form, Inc. in Canastota.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and sailing, and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and the Philadelphia Flyers. Tom, also, enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Tom was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, the American Legion, Charles Miller Post # 140 in Canastota, and Casolwood Golf Course.
He married Betty Gail DiVeronica on September 22, 1979, in Canastota.
Surviving besides his wife, Betty Gail, are: a daughter, Adrienne M. Cerio of Canastota; a son, Eric T. Cerio of Canastota; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Nancy Domenico of Biloxi, MS, Donna M. Cerio of Bristol, RI, Susan and David Kling of Harrisburg, PA, Debra and Larry DiGeorge of Canastota, and Barbara and Douglas Hazen of Canastota; as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Friday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1661 Worcester Road, Suite 301, Framingham, MA 01701, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
