CANASTOTA . . .
Ruth M. Barton, 99, of 2847 Seneca Turnpike, Canastota, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3, 2022, surrounded by her family at Oneida Health.
She was born on July 19, 1922, in Burke, NY, the daughter of the former Adlore and Florence (Dunn) LaPlante.
Ruth spent her early years in Burke and Malone, attending the Burke schools. She has lived in Canastota and Central New York most of her life.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, traveling, puzzles, spending time with her family, and was an avid reader and New York Yankees Fan.
Ruth married James A. Barton, Sr., on October 29, 1941, in Malone. Jim passed away on April 19, 2007.
Surviving are: one son, James A. Barton, Jr., of Canastota; seven daughters and five sons-in-law, Gloria and Ronald Curtis, Sr., of Canastota, Patricia Campbell of East Syracuse, Lynda and Alex Henry of Verona, Ruth G. and Jeff Doty of Sherrill, Constance "Connie" and Scott Merritt, Jan Frink, and Tammy and Bryan Bayne, all of Canastota; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Robinson of Malone, and Janet Reyome of Queensbury; twenty-three grandchildren, Cheryl Pilcher, Ronald Curtis, Jr., Tracey Houseman, Richard Curtis, Kimberlee Everett, Donna Campbell-Rifici, Archie Linnaberry, Bobbette Linnaberry, Wanda Morgan, Ricky Houle, John Henry II, Ronald Belcher, Jennifer Herman, Carolyn Letherland-Ruca, Robert Barton, Jessica Barton, Steven Merritt, Shannon Merritt, Nora Mather, Bradley Frink, Scott Bayne, Heather Bayne and Christy Buss; twenty-nine great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ruth was predeceased by two daughters, Sally Babcock, and Marie Backus; one granddaughter, Christy Letherland; three brothers, Ernest LaPlante, Norman "Wilford" LaPlante, and Earl LaPlante; and three sisters, Beatrice McDonald, Gertrude Lavarnway, and Marion Loffler.
A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Chrisopher Ballard, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. At Ruth's request, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota.
In her memory, contributions may be made to St. Agatha's Church, c/o SOHCC Central Office, 121 St. Joseph's Place, Oneida, NY 13421, with envelopes available at the mass.
