Joe and I grew up in Fayetteville. I think he was class ahead of me. He was always a kind person and very easy to be friends with. I lost track of him years ago. I hope he had a good life.

That smile.
That laugh.
Memories of Joe are always punctuated by his ever-positive, constant and uplifting attitude and supportiveness.
My sadness is profound.
Its been too long - nearly 30 years - since I’ve seen Joe, but in the past decade I tried several times reaching him in Canastota.
It was in my latest effort to do so that I learned of his passing.
I had the privilege of serving with Joe in the US Navy Seabees in Gulfport, MS and Vietnam. In the years since our respective return to civilian life our unit, H Company, had numerous reunions. It was at a reunion in Columbus, OH that I last visited with Joe.
He was respected as a colleague during our service time and loved as a friend ever since.
To Joe’s sister, Susan, family and friends I extend my deepest condolences. It is my intention in the coming weeks to visit Joe’s final resting place and say to my friend, Fair winds and following seas, Brother Joe. We’ve got the watch now. Rest in Peace. You made a lasting difference in many, many lives and I’m honored to be one of those who’s proud to have known you.
The Seabee Motto is ‘Can Do’. Joe Kuhl was a Can Do guy in every way possible.
With lasting gratitude and admiration.

I have not seen Joe since he retired from NYSDOT 20 years ago. I still think of Joe from time to time with a smile in my heart. Joe always had smile on his face and a sunny disposition. I never heard Joe say anything negative about anyone. Joe is the first person I heard say that he like to eat his dessert before the entrée because life is short and he did not want to miss that. I'm sure Joe is at peace now and smiling down on us.
