Joseph John Leibl, "Joe", 83, of Oneida, NY, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Oneida City Hospital.
Joe was born July 22, 1940, in Chicago, IL to the late Joseph Francis and Marguerite (Picciano) Leibl.
Joe was married to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Helen D'Errico, on June 18, 1960, in Gloversville, NY. They had four children: Lynn Marie (Jerry) Garski of Port St. Lucie, FL, Joseph Michael (Evelyn) Leibl of Oneida, Michael Leibl of Canastota, and Anthony Leibl (Christi Quesada) of Clay. He loved his grandchildren with all his heart: Carolyn E. (Anthony) Crivello, Joseph R. Leibl, Vincent J. Leibl, Michael B. Leibl, and Gabriella Berry. He was most recently a great-grandfather of two-year-old Frank E. Crivello. He was so proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them become successful adults. He was a role model for his grandchildren with his strong work ethic, honesty, and success. Carolyn is an attorney and a great wife and mother, Joey joined the family business after college graduation, Vincent graduated college and is becoming a teacher, Mike graduated college and is in the police academy and Gabriella is a high school honor student.
Joe leaves behind a sister and brother that he loved so much. His sister, Barbara Shell of Gloversville, and his brother Francis (Pam) Leibl of Dunkirk, NY. His sisters-in-law, Katherine Cozzolino of Dade City, FL, Rose Kelly of Amsterdam, and Patty (Rick) Gargiulo of Saratoga. He has many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Robert Shell, Edwin Kelly, Salvatore Cozzolino, John Mulhall, Robert Mosconi, and Jack D'Errico. He is predeceased by his sisters-in-law, Carmella Mulhall, and Louise Mosconi. He has many first cousins in Wisconsin that he has been able to spend time with over the past 10 years.
He lived most of his early life in Gloversville, NY, and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1958. In high school, Joe was a very talented athlete and played football and baseball. He also was a boxer and was an avid swimmer. He was a good golfer and was an original member of Kanon Valley Country Club in Oneida and had two holes-in-one. Joe was active in the Boy Scouts when he was younger and was the Chairman of the United Way fund drive in Canastota in the early 70's, which supported local charities. He was also a member of the Canastota Lions Club, Canastota Civic Club, the former Canastota Jaycees Club, and the Sacandaga Elks Lodge in Gloversville.
Early in his career, his parents owned a glove manufacturing business called Maguerite Glove Company where their company created hand sewn leather and designer gloves. Joe was a very successful salesman and he lived in NYC where would go to meet with buyers for the most famous department stores.
He later worked for Korkay Inc. in Broadalbin, NY, before moving to Canastota, NY. He lived in Canastota for most of his life with his family where he then founded Reliable Products in Oneida, NY in 1974. Joe was an entrepreneur and a successful businessman all his life. He and his long-time friend, and chemist Robert Gray, developed and marketed an entire product line of chemical specialties for the recreational vehicle, marine, automotive, motorcycle, industrial, and household markets. Joe was also a real estate developer, building and managing a car wash, auto parts store, and other manufacturing and storage facilities. Joe and his wife, Helen, managed their business with their three sons and their valued employees.
Joe had a deep love for nature, the Adirondack Mountains, and his "camp" on Caroga Lake where he enjoyed 82 years of year-round interests including: golfing, swimming, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and riding ATV's. Joe was the proudest American, loved the American flag and hosted amazing July 4th celebrations with family and friends. Joe loved sports and was an avid Chicago White Sox and Syracuse University fan. Mostly, he loved going to his three sons and three grandsons' football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling matches, tournaments, and playoffs. Early on he was a little league baseball coach. He was a supporter of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, and the Golden Gloves boxing organization. He supported his friend, Ray Rinaldi, and was a founding sponsor of the North Area Athletic Club in Syracuse, that was an educational and training facility for a diverse range of kids. Joe was very generous with both his time and resources and supported many charitable causes including the American Diabetes Association, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, St. Joseph's Indian School, and many others. He also mentored others seeking business advice.
Joe always had a lot of friends, and really enjoyed playing cards and pool with his closest friends. Joe will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, businessman and friend.
Joe's family would like to thank his long-time friends, Caroline and Ed Cerasia, and his caregivers, Frankie, Mary Ann, Tasha, Britney, Jessica, and Kim Ann, for the wonderful care they gave him.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota. The Rev. Christopher J. Ballard, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, November 6, 2023, in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, NY.
