Obituary of Margaret J. "Midge" Chappelle Niles

ONEIDA . . . Margaret J. "Midge" Chappelle Niles, 82, of 251 Belmont Avenue, Oneida, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Oneida Health, following a lengthy illness. She was born on March 6, 1942, in Siloam, the daughter of the late Frank and Lillian (Cunningham) Chappelle. Midge spent her early years in Canastota, graduating from Canastota High School in 1960, and has lived in Oneida since 1967. She worked for Hubbard Industries in Wampsville for many years. Midge was an active member of the Oneida Baptist Church, and sang in the choir. She enjoyed making crafts, baking, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Midge married Burton E. Niles on November 23, 1961, in Oneida. Surviving besides her husband, Burton, are: two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Elizabeth Niles of Cicero, and Scott and Maria Niles of Sherrill; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Scott Smith of Oneida; one sister, Donna Beatty of Little Falls; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Midge was predeceased by three brothers, John Chappelle, Richard "Dick" Chappelle, and Vernon "Bud" Hall; and by four sisters, Catherine Abert, June Spara, Patricia Kelly, and Helen Fizette. At Midge's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at Oneida Castle Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Oneida Baptist Church, 242 Main Street, Oneida, NY 13421.
