Obituary of Salvatore Sgroi

CANASTOTA . . .

Salvatore "Sal" Sgroi, 81, of 3948 Pine Ridge Road, Canastota, passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, following a brief illness.

He was born on August 20, 1937, in Canastota, the son of the late Alfio "Ralph" and Domenica "Dee" (Lazzaro) Sgroi.

Sal spent his early years in Canastota, attending the Canastota schools. He later graduated from Ventura College in Ventura, CA, with an Associates Degree in Tool Design and a Minor in Art. Sal lived in California for 15 years, returning to Canastota in 1973.

He is a US Navy Veteran.

Sal worked for the Department of the Navy at Port Mugu Naval Air Base, California, for 5 years, and later for Northern Industrial Services in Syracuse for many years. He has owned and operated a photography business in his home for the last 25 years.

He was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, the Canastota Civic Club, the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota, and the Sherrill Archery Club.

Sal enjoyed nature, wildlife, photography, traveling, RVing, and spending time with his family and friends.

He married Diana F. "Fay" Hill on March 18, 1967, in Santa Paula, CA.

Surviving besides his wife, Fay, are: one sister, Christine Eastburn of Brighton, CO; one sister-in-law, Debra Sgroi of Rogue River, OR; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sal was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Sgroi.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018, at St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro Street, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes will officiate. The family will greet friends at a luncheon in the church center following the mass. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James Street, Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Greater Lenox Ambulance Service (GLAS), PO Box 382, Canastota, NY 13032, with envelopes available at the church.
